Trees

Postby charlieandme » Mon Oct 26, 2009 12:24 pm

I want some trees for my garden, but would like them to already be quite big (I've not got 50 years to spare waiting for them to grow), B&Q had a few which were ok, but not that big, is there anywhere online to buy them? and when do you have to plant trees?. Sorry Im a total gardening novice.

Well the cheapest way to buy larger trees is to buy bare root trees, these come with basically just the roots and they aren't potted, the season in the UK for selling the starts around November as they need to be sold when they are dormant (not growing). Depending on the weather bare root trees can be sold up until about March and you can pick up a large specimen for under £20, just do a google search on bare root trees and something should come up.

B&Q would be good, or try your local nursery. I wouldn't buy online as you don't really know the quality of what you're getting.

Flowers could have evolved more than once. Comparing the genomes of plants has inclined many to this opinion. If they have multiple origins then more than one of the current theories may be correct. The one thing they have in common is that the smaller plants or understory trees where the first to develop a symbiotic relationship with insects rather than just rely on wind. Tall canopy trees like the Progymnosperm Archaeopteris or the true conifers relied on wind more easily since with height the pollen could travel farther.

Apple Tree!

Postby rachard1583 » Sun Aug 22, 2010 3:53 pm

My 6 year old daughter soaked an apple seed in water and it sprouted years ago. We planted it in a pot with potting soil about a month later. It grew fine and was basically forgotten about on the deck all winter long, and was buried in 4 feet of snow. This spring I was shocked to see it was still alive. We planted it in the ground (with some compost) this spring and it is now almost 6 feet tall.
Before I do anything I just want to make sure that that's what I should do and this is the right time to do it?
